When was the last time you let yourself BE without doing? I’m not talking about meditation. That’s too often a form of doing, the way many people do it. I’m not talking about a mindful practice either. Same as with meditation, too often people engage in mindfulness in a way that makes it a type of doing. I’m talking about plain ole Being and really truly doing nothing beyond just breathing and noticing what you’re aware of.
And now here comes…
Ha! Right! Like when do I have time for that? Let me get to the beach on vacation first! Well, if I can just get out of the house for a bit with the dog. Just let me go grab my cappuccino double latte and sit outside of the office a bit. Yeah, sure! I do that when I get on my bike and plow through the trails!
… the excuses, the reasons of what’s in the way, the ways in which we think we do it.
You will argue with me that the first three do fall into one of these. But the last 2, well, they’re really examples of being, and being “in the zone”. But are they truly? Do you even know what being looks like, is like?
Being
Before coming into being, there is a process that takes us through what we need to get through to truly BE. It takes us down a path of unwinding all that is covering up the Being. That path can be very winding, treacherous, or straight and even smooth and instant. It shows up that instant you stop doing and begin to move into the direction of Being.
I know you’ve experienced this path. You go to focus on the breath when suddenly you become aware of all the work stuff that needs doing before NOW; Just as you sit down to take a pause from some activity, your back starts to scream with the agony of tight muscles making you get up to take an anti-inflammatory; You go to sit down at that local sidewalk Café to enjoy your double latte and all that goes through your mind is a multitude of concerns about what you’re wearing, who was trying to reach you on social, or that selfie needing retaking. Or even better yet, you’ve been sitting there calmly focused on that breath, really doing that being thing, for like forever… for a grand total of 30 seconds.
True Being and Pure Doing
True Being is that moment, however long it lasts, when everything seems to be at a standstill even as there is movement. It is a moment when the senses are heightened, time slows down to stand still. There are no thoughts. There is no future and no past. There is only right now.
True Being is when you become completely aware of and immersed in your senses, and you are suspended in the timelessness of existence. It’s not about sitting still in meditation. It can happen in the most intensely physical active moment. It’s the state of being in the gap between time and no time.
True Being has a flow just as Pure Doing has. Being and Doing ebb and flow into each other. When you are able to get into that True Being and stay in it, you will find that you naturally come to a crescendo moment, a peak in Being. This is when the tide of Being turns and progresses towards Doing. It can come as fast as it comes slowly.
When you are in that True Being, you can feel it, sense it. The Being expands, fills up, becomes clearer. Then, after it peaks, it’s like a dropping down or contraction. The Being is giving way to Doing. Being is over and finished for the moment, and not moving into Doing at this point leans to stagnation. This leads to a sort of consuming of the Being, which is essentially the process of death. Staying in Being when it is over is just as detrimental as is moving out of Being into Doing too quickly.
Timing is off. Opportunities are missed. Inability to take action sets in. Possibilities disappear.
What Gets In the Way
This death moment, the ending of something, is part of the catch. “The catch” is what keeps us from dropping down so deeply into Being that time becomes infinite. One thing always comes to an end before something new begins. Being needs to end before Doing happens. If Being doesn’t end we die, in a manner of speaking, and the same happens when Doing doesn’t give way to being.
Doing holds the same unfoldment as Being. It too reaches a peak expression which then releases back into being. And just as with Being, if Doing is pushed beyond its natural endpoint, that also leads to a death, and I should say, an unfruitful death that yields no gain.
Physical/Mental burnout takes hold. Solutions aren’t found. Accomplishments are eroded.
Both Being and Doing have their natural endings, their proper death, that we need to willingly face and except. Both are essential to life and to our well being. We cannot be our fullest expression, our full potential, we cannot even bring these about without both Being and Doing. The mastery of Doing is essential to Being and mastering Being is crucial to Doing.
Letting Go and Stepping into the Flow
The more you are willing to let go and release into that True Being, and the more often you do so, the more likely you are to find ease in all that you choose to do. That, comes from mastering Being. The more you find the mastery of Doing, by being aware of yourself completely in the midst of doing any action, the smoother you glide into Being.
When we don’t follow through from either Being or Doing, when we are not seizing the opportunity, we are placing ourselves in a gap versus in the space of full connection to the wholeness within and the whole of existence. The only way to get out of that suspended gap is to come into and stay midline.
Coming into that ‘midline’ means coming into a Pure Being where both Being and Doing are present versus in the gap where neither are. Stepping out of that gap is about coming into a different state of Being that is not dictated by duality or polarity, but rather one that is governed by Wholeness and Oneness of the totality.
This culminates into such a seamless ebb and flow between Being and Doing that both become one, both are present within the other and within every moment. It’s in these moments that you transcend limitations and become completely engaged, fully in the moment and are limitless.
